When it comes to Super Bowl 50, the combatants are established for the final test before getting to the NFL’s biggest stage.
The New England Patriots are hoping to get to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, to defend their title in a second straight Super bowl appearance.
Super Bowl 50 will kick off February 7 at 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
If the Patriots earn the franchise’s first postseason win against the Denver Broncos in the Mile High City, they will earn that trip. However, New England is 0-3 all-time in the postseason when playing at Denver, including an 0-2 mark in the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era. If they don’t succeed, the Broncos will win the AFC championship and return to the Super Bowl for the second time in three years.
Both teams competed against the Seattle Seahawks in the last two Super Bowls, with the Patriots winning last year and the Broncos getting thrashed the year before.
The NFC Championship Game between the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers also features the top two seeds in the conference.
The Panthers defeated the Cardinals 27-16 in last season’s wild-card game, but Bruce Arians’ team was injury-depleted in that game. Quarterback Carson Palmer was out with an ACL injury, and the Arizona backups did not have enough firepower to earn a road playoff win.
This is clearly a much more high-profile game between two teams that have performed superbly all season. The Panthers were in top form against Seattle in the first half of the divisional-round game, as they raced off to a 31-0 lead that knocked the defending champions for a loop.
While Seattle bounced back after halftime and made it a relatively close 31-24 score, the Panthers were never in danger of losing the contest.
The Cardinals cannot say the same thing. They trailed the Green Bay Packers in the fourth quarter before coming back to take a seven-point lead. Arizona was then victimized by an Aaron Rodgers Hail Mary TD pass that sent the game into overtime.
Following a 75-yard catch-and-run from Larry Fitzgerald to open the extra period, Arizona won the game on a Palmer-to-Fitzgerald shovel pass for a touchdown. However, the Cardinals were quite shaky.
They will need to be a lot better if they are going to beat the Panthers. While Cam Newton has had a brilliant year with 35 TD passes and 10 more TD runs, he is not fighting this battle by himself.
With weapons like tight end Greg Olsen (77 receptions for 1,104 yards and seven TDs), running back Jonathan Stewart (989 rushing yards) and wideout Ted Ginn Jr. (10 TD receptions), the Panthers can attack in many ways.
They also have the defense to stop the Cardinals and make huge game-changing plays. Linebacker Luke Kuechly had an interception return for a touchdown early in the first quarter against the Seahawks, and Thomas Davis and Josh Norman are capable of making impact plays as well.
The Panthers are three-point favorites for this game at Bank of America Stadium, according to Odds Shark.
That home-field advantage may make the biggest difference, and look for the Panthers to assert themselves over the talented Cardinals in the fourth quarter and win the game.
While the Broncos are at home, they are three-point underdogs to New England.
It’s no surprise that the Patriots are favored, as they appear to be the far more dangerous offensive team.
The Tom Brady-Peyton Manning rivalry may be in its final stages, as Manning struggled all season with injuries and ineffective play. Manning had a 9-to-17 TD-to-interception ratio during the regular season and was benched by head coach Gary Kubiak in a Week 10 loss to Kansas City.
Manning did not return to the starting lineup until the divisional-round victory over the undermanned Pittsburgh Steelers.
While Manning struggled, Brady had another excellent season, throwing for 4,770 yards with 36 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.
Brady was mentioned as a frequent MVP candidate in the first half of the season, but his production slowed in the second half of the year when the offense was hit with a number of injuries.
That offense found its stride in the divisional playoff win over Kansas City as wide receiver Julian Edelman returned to the lineup and caught 10 passes for 100 yards while Rob Gronkowski caught two TD passes.
The Broncos may not have the offense to trade points with the Pats, but they have the No. 1 defense in the league. It will be up to linebackers Von Miller (11.0 sacks) and DeMarcus Ware (7.5 sacks) to put enough pressure on Brady and the offensive line to keep the Pats from producing consistently.
Sports Authority Field at Mile High has been the one place that has prevented the Patriots from adding to their glory.
It won’t be easy this time, but Belichick and Brady will finally find a way to win in Denver and advance to the Super Bowl.
